Character Health.

Getting Hurt.

All characters have 4 hit-points, minimum. Characters with the “Tough-as-nails” attribute have 2 extra hit-points (for a total of 6 hit-points). Characters who during character creation pick the “Tough-as-nails” attribute twice have 8 hit points in total. If you do not have the “Tough-as-nails” attribute you start with 4 hit points.

If a melee weapon hits you, you lose a hit-point. If a crossbow bolt hits you, you loose a hit-point. If you are shot by a gun, you loose 2 hit-points. If you are shot in the head by a gunshot you die. Regardless of how many hit points you have getting your brains blown out by a gun-wielding-nutter still kills you dead.

Please role-play your hits. They Hurt! If someone chops into your arm with a (larp-safe) kitchen knife please stop using that arm and scream. If someone breaks your leg with a baseball bat please do not run around, but instead limp pitifully & groan in pain.

Dying.

If you reach 0 hit-points then you start to die. You have a 5 minute period of screaming, convulsing and otherwise dramatically passing-on. If you do not receive medical aid in the first 4 minutes of this time then you are a goner, a dead-person, passing on. If a character with the ‘Medical training’ skill starts treating you in the first 4 minutes you will live, though you remain at 0 hit-points.

A character without hit-points cannot take any strenuous action beyond a slow crawl or walk. He cannot use any skills but can fire a gun (though can not aim). He can not fight (you should role-play fighting if necessary but should role-play weak blows and should fight to loose).

Healing.

If someone has the ‘Medical training’ skill you may attempt to prevent someone from dying. To do so make them aware that you are a doctor and are treating them say something like “I’m a Doctor, let me through” and while treating them keep up a medical-sounding patter “It’s pierced the intercostal muscle”, “It’s ok, you are going to make it”, “Keep pressure on here”… or any other combination of phrases you have heard from Casualty, M*A*S*H, or Dr Kildare. You should role-play treating them for as long as you deem dramatically necessary but no less then 2 minutes. At the end of which say something like “Well, you will live but don’t do anything strenuous”.

If your character has the ‘Medical training’ skill and access to the ‘Medical supplies’ piece of equipment he can alleviate the symptoms of a wound with ½ hours treatment (bandaging the wounded area and making a patient comfortable) and restore 1 hit-point with a further 15 minutes of treatment. Once the symptoms of a wound are gone you are still expected to role-play the wound (your leg is still broken even if you are in a splint and on pain-killers). More than one medically trained character may treat a character but the effects do not stack.

Someone with the ‘Medical training’ skill, access to the ‘Medical supplies’ equipment and who is ‘Tough-as-nails’ can treat themselves but it takes twice as long (1 hour to treat symptoms, 1 hour 30 minutes to treat symptoms & heal back 1 hit-point).
